Winter Squash
Fall squash are a wonderful way to finish the season. They are called winter squash or sometimes hard squash because they can be stored in a cool dry basement or root cellar for the winter. Try butternuts or acorns with Green Field Farms delicious maple syrup to make a great Thanksgiving dish.
- Butternut
- Butternut Squash, also known in Australia and New Zealand as butternut pumpkin, is a type of winter squash. It has a sweet, nutty taste similar to that of a pumpkin, and can be used in pies instead of pumpkin. It has yellow skin and orange fleshy pulp. Butternuts are rich in beta-carotene and fiber.
- Acorn
- Acorn Squash, also called pepper squash or Des Moines squash, is a winter squash with distinctive longitudinal ridges and sweet, yellow-orange flesh. The most common acorn squash have a dark green, almost black skin, but can also be found in white or orange, or speckled with all three colors.
- Spaghetti
- Spaghetti Squash, like their hard squash cousins, have a unique mild flavor considering the complex nutrient content they provide. The fruit can range from ivory to yellow or orange in color. The orange varieties have higher carotene content. Spaghetti Squash is undoubtedly one of the most unique foods you’ll come across. This melon-shaped winter squash is named for its flesh, which separates into spaghetti-like strands after it is cooked.
